Solar PV System Maintenance

Regular solar PV system checking is vital if you have a solar photovoltaic system (also known as a solar PV system) to ensure your system operates at its optimum efficiency.

A solar PV system is made up of numerous different parts such as:

  • solar panels
  • an inverter or maybe microinverters under the panels
  • a generation meter
  • wiring and fixings
  • possibly a battery or two either connected to a Hybrid or standalone inverter/charger controller

This means that it only takes one part of your solar PV system to cause the whole system to operate at a poor efficiency level.

Therefore, it is recommended that each component part is checked by a qualified technician on a regular basis to ensure your system is safe and producing the maximum amount of clean electricity that it is capable of producing.

What does a typical solar PV maintenance service involve?

It makes sense to check a solar system in order from the solar panels where the solar electricity is generated, through to the metre where the electricity passes to be used to power your home, business or even to the national grid (if you are selling the excess electricity you produce to the grid).

The following are the typical steps involved when we conduct a solar PV maintenance service for our customers.

Solar Panel Check

PV (PhotoVoltaic) panels do not require constant maintenance, although it is advisable to keep the front of each solar panel clean to ensure that energy production is unaffected.

Solar Panel Repair technicians will:

  • Carry out a visual inspection of PV panels, wiring and components for general condition & degradation, including safety signage.
  • Perform a series of tests to verify the voltage at the inverter location, subject to access.
  • Perform additional tests to narrow down any issues that may be present.
  • Analyse whether the panels have performance issues that we can ascertain with further information from you or a copy of your original MCS Certificate from the solar PV installation.
  • Verify operation of meter and means of AC & DC isolation.

Solar Inverter Check

The main purpose of the solar inverter is to convert the solar energy generated by your solar panels from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) so that your home and utility grid can use it.

The inverter does not require constant maintenance, however, it is recommended to have your solar inverter serviced once per year.

Solar Panel Repair technicians will:

  • Check for dirt and other debris that may lead to a loss of power or cause a failure.
  • Verify the data being generated by the inverter are logical and coincide with the generation meter albeit there will always be a discrepancy between the meters.

Solar System Wiring Check

The wires, connectors and terminals are what link all of the parts of your system together and it is important that all wires are in good condition and connected well.

Solar Panel Repair technicians will:

  • Check cables for ground protection connection.
  • Check tightness of all terminal points.
  • Test to see if there are mechanical or electrical overload stresses.
  • Visually check wires and connections for wear and tear.

What does a typical solar PV maintenance service cost?

This depends on how big your solar PV system is, solar systems vary significantly and this is because they are usually custom built to suit the individual needs of a customer. It is because of this that it is impossible to provide a set price list. However, we maintain hundreds of solar PV systems for customers across the South East and this is because we provide expert solar PV system maintenance services at a reasonable price.

Whatever your solar PV system maintenance requirement is, you can be confident that Solar Panel Repair will have your system running at its optimum efficiency in next to no time all at a fair price.
